Bibliothekarin: maximale Biederkeit

Heute habe ich zufällig die Folge "Nymphen und Don Juans" der deutschen Krimi-Serie "Der letzte Bulle" gesehen: Eine pathologisch sexsüchtige Bibliothekarin verführt einen Kunden in der Stadtbibliothek und wird wenig später ermordet aufgefunden. Von ihrer Chefin wird sie "als fleißig und pünktlich - eigentlich so, wie man sich eine Bibliothekarin wünscht" beschrieben. Über sie und ihren Ehemann sagt ein Polizist sinngemäß: "Er ist Schreiner, sie war Bibliothekarin, alle attestieren ihnen maximale Biederkeit". Hinter der Fassade war das anscheinend anders...

CfP für die Diversity in Libraries Conference in UK

Infofest Kent is a conference partnership between Information Services at the University of Kent and CILIPinKent, that provides an opportunity for librarians and information professionals to share experiences and network. We are excited to announce our next Infofest Kent event on the theme of Diversity in our libraries. Nick Poole, CILIP CEO, has emphasised the organisations need to place equality, diversity and inclusivity at the centre of its actions and "to stand for the values that we hold dear as a profession - for human rights, equalities and diversity, preservation of access to knowledge, public benefit, intellectual freedom, impartiality & confidentiality" (Diversity within the profession, Feb 2019). We want Infofest Kent to be a space where those working in the profession can identify barriers and solutions to the issues of equality, diversity and inclusivity in their specific working contexts. We want particularly to be able to offer a range of resources so all attendees have something practical they can take with them to use in their work.

Call for Papers

We would like to feature underrepresented voices in the library community and actively encourage submissions from colleagues at all stages of their career who have never presented at a conference or event before, as well as to more experienced voices from diverse communities.

The conference will bring together librarians and information professionals from a variety of sectors and will provide an opportunity to hear about the practical approaches being taken to provide diverse voices and resources in library collections, to share ideas and knowledge, and develop new networks.

Topics could cover, but are not limited to how diversity and inclusivity are considered in:

• The services offered to library users
• The workforce in libraries and insuring equity
• Meeting diverse needs of users
• Library spaces
• Collection development and management

We are keen to provide opportunities for anyone working in the profession to share experiences and knowledge. This can be a keynote, workshop, lightening talk or panel idea.

Entry to the conference will be waived for the speaker, although unfortunately we are not able to offer travel or accommodation expenses. However, if this is an impediment to submitting a paper/attend the event, please let us know. A selection panel will consider submissions and successful applicants will be informed by Monday 13 January.

Fachbibliographie der Archivschule Marburg in neuem Glanz

Die Fachbibliographie zum Archivwesen, die von der Archivschule Marburg betreut wird, wurde neu gestaltet und ist seit heute online. "Unsere alte Allegro-Datenbank ist in HeBIS (das Hessische Bibliotheks- und Informationssystem) überführt worden und steht nun in neuem Outfit zur Verfügung. Die Such- und Anzeigemöglichkeiten sind komfortabler als früher und die Daten sind ab sofort wieder auf dem neuesten Stand. Bitte testen Sie reichlich!", schreibt Monika Oehme heute in der Archivliste.

Library Mistress und Frau von Wald

2019 wird das Jahr mit den wenigsten Einträgen in diesem Blog. Das hat viele Gründe - einer davon ist ein neues Projekt: "Frau von Wald" gibt es mittlerweile als Blog, auf Instagram, Facebook und Twitter.

Frau von Wald ist eine Wortspielerei mit Frau von Welt. Unter diesem Label bündle ich meine Aktivitäten rund um Wald, Forst und Holz. Wie ist es dazu gekommen? Meine Großeltern haben ein Sägewerk betrieben – wer weiß, vielleicht ist mein Interesse erblich bedingt? Und als Bibliothekarin möchte ich natürlich wissen, wo das Papier herkommt. Ich versuche, mich vielseitig auf diesem Gebiet fortzubilden. Die Liste der absolvierten Kurse und Lehrgänge reicht von der Waldwirtschaft für Einsteiger_innen über Wald als Therapeutikum in der Gerontologie bis zur Waldameisenhegerin, von der Forstkultur über die Heilkraft von Wildtierfett bis zur Speisekammer Natur. Seit heuer habe ich auch Forstwirtschaft auf der BOKU inskribiert und schon zwei Prüfungen absolviert. Außerdem werde ich im Herbst meine Ausbildungen zur Waldpädagogin und zur Waldbaden-Trainerin abschließen.

Der Vorläufer von Frau von Wald, das Weblog "Buckelholz. Wald, Forst, Holz in der Buckligen Welt" war im Jahr 2015 Teil meiner Projektarbeit zum Zertifikatslehrgang Forst+Kultur. Buckelholz begleitete die Konzeptionierung und Recherche für eine Wanderausstellung, die die Bedeutung von Wald und Forst(wirtschaft) und die vielseitige Verwendung des Werkstoffs Holz in der ehemaligen "Waldmark" zum Thema hat. Mit der Zeit hatte ich den Wunsch, das Blog thematisch und geographisch weiterzuentwickeln. Frau von Wald war geboren – zunächst als Instagram-Account, seit Oktober 2017 auch als Blog, mittlerweile auch auf Twitter und Facebook. Das Logo hat mir Christoph Gratzer entworfen.

Mein Interesse erstreckt sich von der Forstwirtschaft über Bäume und den Holzhandel bis zur Holzverarbeitung – beispielhaft: historische und moderne Handwerksberufe wie Fassbinderei, Wagnerei, Zimmerei und Tischlerei; sozialgeschichtliche Aspekte wie das Leben der Holzknechte; bäuerliche Nutzungen wie Waldweide; Köhlerei und Pecherei; energetische Nutzung von Holz; Industriezweige wie Papiererzeugung und Sägewerke; künstlerische und volkskulturelle Ausdrucksformen wie Holzschnitte, Holzschnitzerei und Drechselarbeiten; Jagd und Sammeln von Kräutern, Wurzeln und Schwammerln.

Bürokratin in der Nachtschattenglut

"Nachtschattenglut" ist eine radikal queer-feministische Interpretation des Wiens der 1920er, mit den Stilmitteln des klassischen Stummfilms – freigeistig, frivol und lebenslustig!

Freundinnen von mir haben den wunderbaren Film "Nachtschattenglut" ins Leben gerufen - ich darf darin eine strenge Bürokratin spielen, was mir dank des langjährig geübten Bibliothekarinnenblicks gar nicht so schwer gefallen ist :-) Wer entdeckt mich im Trailer?

Gender and Sexuality in Information Studies Colloquium - Call for contributions

GSISC 2020: Technologies and Race, Gender, Sexuality, and the Body in Information Studies seeks to create an inclusive space for difficult, fruitful conversations around technology, however defined, as it affects and is affected by race, gender, sexuality, and ability. We aim to foster conversations that consider "technology" as the expression of material cultures, labor, and embodiment; as well as sites of empowerment or oppression.

In libraries, and in the professional discourses of librarianship and information studies, we often talk about "technology" as a means to an end. Or, we speculate about technology as though it emanated from the horizon of a futurity that appears sometimes threatening, sometimes empowering, but always inevitable: e.g., artificial intelligence will "revolutionize" the ways we find and use information. Both kinds of discourse omit the ways technologies begin and end in the flesh — how technologies shape habits of body and mind, just as those habits influence the design and construction of technologies.

The planning committee for the 2020 Gender and Sexuality in Information Studies Colloquium invites you to join continue these conversations July 24, 2020 in Washington, DC at George Washington University.

We invite proposals that address the problems, power, and potential of "technologies" in libraries and archives, past, present, and future, and seek a range of interpretations of the concept of technology.

Questions might include, but are not limited to:

• How do search algorithms, metadata standards, and user interfaces challenge or reinforce white supremacy, heteronormative patriarchy, and ableism?
• How do our catalogs, databases, finding aids, and collections disguise the traces of oppression, even while perpetuating the violence visited upon the oppressed?
• How do we talk about the absence of voices (either in the historical record or from our present-day communities) that haunts the architecture and design of our systems?
• How have technologies been used to selectively forget pasts to perpetuate certain futures? How are technologies used to unearth the forgotten?
• How do we address the absent presence of laboring bodies behind our technologies, especially those bodies whose labor is devalued and poorly remunerated?

Das Colloquium findet zum vierten Mal statt - Rückblick auf 2018, 2016 und 2014.

Initiative für die Umbenennung der Melvil Dewey Medal

Die Feminist Task Force der American Library Association (ALA) wird am Samstag, den 22. Juni, eine Resolution zur Umbenennung der Melvil Dewey Medal einbringen. Begründet wird sie unter anderem damit, dass Dewey Kolleginnen sexuell belästigte, antisemitisch und minderheitenfeindlich agierte, was den Grundwerten der ALA wie Vielfalt und Gleichberechtigung widerspricht. Hier ist der offizielle Text der Resolution:

Whereas the American Library Association awards the Melvil Dewey Medal to recognize librarians for achievement for recent creative leadership of high order;

Whereas Melvil Dewey did not permit Jewish people, African Americans, or other minorities admittance to the resort owned by Dewey and his wife;

Whereas he was censured by the New York State Board of Regents for his refusal to admit Jews to his resort, whereupon he resigned as New York State Librarian;

Whereas Dewey made numerous inappropriate physical advances toward women he worked with and wielded professional power over;

Whereas during the 1906 ALA conference there was a movement to censure Dewey after four women came forward to accuse him of sexual impropriety, and he was ostracized from the organization for decades;

Whereas the behavior demonstrated for decades by Dewey does not represent the stated fundamental values of ALA in equity, diversity, and inclusion; now therefore be it

Resolved, that the American Library Association (ALA), on behalf of its members, rename the Melvil Dewey Medal to remove Melvil Dewey's association with the award.

Die Wohnung, die er im Kloster bezieht, hatte seinem Vorgänger, Pater Mrozek, gehört, der auf eine kuriose Art Selbstmord begangen hat. Ernest Herz muss feststellen, dass er mit seiner Vision einer zeitgemäßen Bibliothek in der konservativ-klerikalen Gesellschaft des Klosters auf Widerstände stößt... Skurril, komisch und liebevoll, mit ihrem unnachahmlichen Blick für das schräge Detail, macht Marjana Gaponenko die Welt der Bibliothek zum spannend-abgründigen Schauplatz.

Bibliothekarin "strahlte Durchschnittlichkeit geradezu aus"

Vom Aussehen her konnte man nicht unbedingt sagen, dass ich besonders auffällig wäre, und insgesamt war mir Diskretion am liebsten. Ich strahlte Durchschnittlichkeit geradezu aus: mittelgroß (eins sechzig), weder zu dick noch zu dünn, die kastanienbraunen Haare immer zu einem Pferdeschwanz gebunden, damit sie mir nicht ständig ins Gesicht fielen.

Das kann ja wohl nur eine Bibliothekarin sein! Diesmal eine Schulbibliothekarin aus "Keine Wahl" (Pas le choix), dem ersten Band der Reihe "Samantha Watkins ou Les chroniques d'un quotidien extraordinaire" von Aurélie Venem, einem zuerst im Selbstverlag und jetzt bei Amazon Crossing erschienenem Buch - eher der Vollständigkeit halber gekauft.

Read harder challenge: Ich nehme die Herausforderung an

Auf Book Riot habe ich von der "Read Harder"-Challenge gelesen. Das ist eine inspirierende inhaltliche Ergänzung zur quantitativen 75books-Challenge auf LibraryThing. Einfach nur so lesen? Pfff! ;-)

Digital Humanities: Virtual Open Data hackathon series

Hinweis des Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities:

Not only in the context of Digital Humanities but also in other research areas the Open Data movement is gaining momentum. One example of this development is the International Open Data Day which is becoming more prominent every year. The City of Vienna has launched its own annual Open Data happening. But also in the context of DH Open Data is becoming a vital part of the research process as projects such as ELEXIS are opening up (research) data. One of the benefits of Open Data is that it can be used by anyone for any purpose which makes it an ideal resource for hackathons.

For this reason, the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ACDH-OeAW) is launching a virtual Open Data hackathon series, offering people all over the globe the possibility to participate and contribute without having to travel.

Participants will be given a specific Open Data set and a fixed time frame within which to solve a given task on the basis of the provided data. The best submissions will be awarded winners’ certificates and cash prizes. In the end, all submissions will be made available Open Source in order for all results created in the course of the event series to be available and reusable for the entire DH community.
