In Kenia gibt es seit 1996 das "Camel Library Service". Damit werden mehrere Ziele verfolgt: die Bekämpfung des Analphabetismus, der in einigen Regionen bei 85 Prozent liegt; Versorgung mit Literatur zum Wissensgewinn und zur Freizeitgestaltung; Unterstützung formaler Bildung... Das Kenya National Library Service betreibt die mobile Bibliothek von Montag bis Donnerstag; von Freitag bis Sonntag ruhen die Kamele aus, werden medizinisch betreut, wenn nötig, und gefüttert.
Wie's funktioniert: "A day starts with the loading of books and other library materials into 4 boxes, which carry about a total of 300 books. They are then loaded on to the 3 camels together with a tent, 2 chairs, a table and umbrellas. Once loaded, the camels move out in a caravan to designated stations such as village centres and settlement schemes. A Librarian in charge, two assistants and a skilled camel herdsman leads the caravan".
