"Universities are using debt collectors to chase overdue library fines as documents show late fees are turning into a bonus revenue stream. An investigation of overdue fees reveals one university student racked up a $4329 debt, including 'lost book charges', last year. More than 40,000 students had outstanding fines as of June 30, with Sydney University having the most fines issued at $607,497 for the financial year".
